We had to invent a new word for a new concept ... "Tilapiaponics"

About Us (more)
We are farmers, practitioners, educators and ambassadors of aquaponics. Our goal is to show you how easy and rewarding it is to grow your own food. How to take a few square feet of your backyard to supplement your food budget. We are going to translate all of the 'high-tech' jargon of Aquaculture and Hydroponics into understandable everyday language. We will empower you to take back some control over the food you eat.
Have you kept goldfish or guppies? Have you planted flowers or shrubs? If you have you already know enough to get started raising your own food and to become a "BackYard Farmer".
Aquaponics
One of the projects we are doing is a demonstration of self-sufficiency and organic sustainability. Once we have worked out the basic system dynamics we plan to design the process and facilities to be easily managed from a wheel chair. This type of aquaponics could easily be the future of urban sustainability systems for food production and for organic waste recycling.
The entire process of hydroponic plant production and raising fish and aquatic plants is not physically challenging. The current Aquariums, ponds, tanks used for aquaculture and the hydroponic grow beds are not currently produced in designs that accommodate a person in a wheel chair. We plan to change that by demonstrating the use of readily available recycled and off the shelf components to build a system that is readily and easily managed from a wheel chair.

Building Our Aquaponics Demo System!
Start with an IBC Tote. Cut off the top section, wire frame and plastic tank separately. Invert the the top section and rotate 90 degrees.
Here you will see an original tank and a ‘cut’ tank. Add a top railing, a recirculating pump from the tank drain to a distribution manifold and some Hydroton hydroponic grow media and it looks like this:
Notice that there is also a PVC framed ‘greenhouse’ added here also. The small black tub is for Duckweed and has a ‘blocked’ overflow drain to control the depth of the water and prevent the Duckweed from going down the drain. It drains directly into the ‘grow bed’ to help water the plants.
Notice the timer on the top leg of the distribution manifold. This timer floods the grow bed for 3 minutes every 2 hrs. creating a ‘flood and drain’ hydroponic system.
Here you will see that I’ve added to the distribution manifold. The center valve is set manually and sends some of the water through a 200’ coil of black tubing on the garage roof. It can bring the water temperature up as much as 10 degrees on a sunny day.
Here you have it - Chapter 1!
